Charity for Christmas

I think I’ve completely grown out of wanting presents for Christmas. I’d rather just know that people are growing smarter, and that reality television shows are dying out. I’ve never been a charitable person either, but something about supporting free knowledge for all makes me feel warm and Christmassy inside. For that reason, I donated to Wikipedia. Hopefully everyone will.

Conditional code for universal iOS apps

With help from one of my colleagues, I found a simple way of specifying a set of rules for iPad, and a separate set of rules for iPhone/iPod Touch. Apple recommends using user interface idioms, which might look something like this: Continue reading

More transcriptions!

I have teamed up with Zsolt Korompay and Wolfgang Schüler to make Drums Notated the best resource for drum transcriptions. We now have performances by Vinnie Colaiuta, Peter Erskine, Gavin Harrison, Dave DiCenso, Dennis Chambers, Jojo Mayer, Omar Hakim, and more.

So drummers, what are you waiting for? Check it out now.

First nothing, then everything

Isn’t it funny how all sorts of interesting things can happen all at the same time? Over the weekend, I visited Trójmiasto in Poland with my good friend Jesper. We arrived to fantastic weather, and made the most of our time with go-kart racing*, a fancy dinner, some great nightclubbing in Sopot, and even just taking my little whip out for a spin.

Returning on Sunday afternoon wasn’t quite as enjoyable. Our flight was delayed by an hour and customs in Malmö delayed us further. This meant we missed our bus, which connected us with our train back to Göteborg. We ended up being delayed by three hours, and had to buy new train tickets.

Things always get better though. On Tuesday, my new computer arrived.  A 1.7 GHz i5 MacBook Air with 4GB RAM, courtesy of my boss. Awesome! It’s unbelievably fast, and handles all my graphics, design and development work, and even some gaming to boot. I also managed to get my hands on iOS5 (thanks Adrian!)

With all this new Apple stuff on my desk, it seems ironic that Steve Jobs, the founder of all of it, died this morning.

*For the record, I was fastest ;)

Overcome by Nerdiness

I just saw this:

And I laughed. I can’t believe I found that funny.

The Start of Something Beautiful

I am now on my lunch break, on my first day of work as a developer at itiden! I have overcome my nerves, and I love it here. The office is fantastic, and it’s in the center of town. I have a great big shiny iMac to work with, and the staff are all really friendly.

My first project was to build a CMS website for a client in Stockholm. I’ve worked a great deal with WordPress, so I know my way around. The boss seemed particularly pleased at how quickly I managed to roll out a finished product. Success! If I can keep my colleagues impressed for two weeks, they’ll take me on full-time and I’ll have a real career!

I never would have thought it, but I’m genuinely very excited to come to work every day and learn more about software development. This week I’ll be focusing mostly on PHP and JavaScript. I’m playing with Objective-C too, because I’d love to develop apps for iOS.

Feels like home!

Where are the drum transcriptions?

I frequently receive emails from drummers around the world looking for my transcription of Gavin Harrison’s Slippin’ Away performance from PASIC, 2008.

That particular transcription – along with a few others – is available for instant download from http://drumsnotated.com.

It’s a wonderful system; you choose the transcription you want, and it is automatically emailed to you immediately after purchase.

Enjoy!

CSS Beautifier and Media Queries

A large portion of a front-end designer’s work involves fiddling with CSS, so it’s no surprise how quickly a style sheet can become an incomprehensible mess. One tool I particularly like using during a design process is the CSS Code Beautifier. It formats style sheets in a number of ways depending on how efficient or legible you need it to be.

There is a caveat with this tool however; for some reason, it breaks the CSS3 media query syntax, changing something correct like:

@media screen and (max-width:480px) {}

… Into something that will be misunderstood by the browser like:

@media screen and max-width480px{}

30 Day Song Challenge

Rather than take 30 days to compile a collection of music that’s important to me, I’ll do it in one.

  1. My favourite song: Start of Something Beautiful
  2. My least favourite song: American Idiot
  3. A song that makes me happy: Hi Friend
  4. A song that makes me sad: I Can’t Go To Sleep
  5. A song that reminds me of someone: Seven
